Located on Serangoon Road and bounded by Sungei Road, Jalan Besar and Lavender Street, Little India is a gazetted conservation area and one of Singapore’s oldest historical precincts. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Little India was better known for its cattle trade, lime quarries, brick-kilns and small-scale plantations growing betel nut, gambier, nutmeg and sugarcane, before it eventually developed into a commercial, residential and cultural hub for the Indian community.

As a historical precinct, Little India offers a mix of the past and the present with traditional trades such as garland makers and textile traders located next to modern businesses such as provision shops, restaurants, gold and jewellery stores. It also houses landmarks such as Little India Arcade, House of Tan Teng Niah, Tekka Market, Mustafa Centre, Indian Heritage Centre as well as temples, mosques, churches and old shophouses.

The Little India of today has become a focal point for the Indian community and the centre of community celebrations during festivals such as Thaipusam, Pongal and Deepavali. It is also a vibrant place teeming with Indian culture, yet with a strong multi-cultural flavour with people from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds intermingling, working and living together
